About the Spelling Bee

- March 9, 2023
- Grades 4-6 at 8:30 a.m./Grades 7-9 at 1 p.m.
- SBCEO Auditorium, 4400 Cathedral Oaks Road, Santa Barbara
- This event is for students, grades 4-9.
NOTE: Contestants who place first or second in the Santa Barbara County Spelling Bee will have the opportunity to compete in the California State Spelling Bee, which will be held May 13, 2023 at the San Joaquin County Office of Education.

Does my child need a chaperone for the entire competition?
Yes. We will have a sitting area set up outside the auditorium for guardians, caregivers, and school staff to wait while the competition is held inside. Students will be released on a scheduled basis depending on their status as the day progresses. You can leave when your child has been released.

What happens if my child wins the SBCEO Spelling Bee?
Your child will receive a personal trophy and his/her/their name will be added to the perpetual trophy delivered to the school site. Parents will receive information about the State Spelling Bee that takes place May 13, 2023 in San Joaquin, CA.

Can my child bring a snack or drink on the day of the Spelling Bee?
All children can bring a light snack and water to the competition. There will be a scheduled break.

Can I watch my child compete during the Spelling Bee in the auditorium?
No. We will have a sitting area set up outside the auditorium for guardians, caregivers, and school staff to wait while the competition is held inside. Students will be released on a scheduled basis depending on their status as the day progresses.

As a parent, can I register my child for the SBCEO Spelling Bee?
No. All children must be registered to participate in the SBCEO Spelling Bee through their sponsor school. Please contact your child’s school for specific qualifying information at that site.
