    "Reading Workshop" Using Responsive Teaching

    Reading Workshop using Responsive Teaching is a strategy that employs current best practices in teaching, while supporting the individual reading needs of every student.     Visual Strategies for Learning - On the Go

    Research has shown that visual supports work well to facilitate communication with children. Visual supports in a mini binder are used in our preschool classrooms to help children understand the schedule of the day, expectations, choices available or not available, voice volume, and how to navigate a variety of challenging social situations.

    Combining Color and Mathematics to Bridge the Gap for English Language Learners
    When students use color intentionally for the purpose of expressing, clarifying, and connecting their thinking between diagrams, tables, graphs, and equations all students, especially English learners, benefit and the language barrier is reduced.  Extensions to higher level mathematics can be made by using color intentionally to produce explicit and recursive formulas for linear (arithmetic), exponential (geometric), and other sequences.

    Workshop Model

    The workshop model (which includes both reading and writing workshop) is based upon the gradual release of responsibility (GRR) model, a format in which the work-load is gradually shifted from the teacher to the student in order to scaffold the learning. In a workshop, the students gather together for a direct instruction mini-lesson in which they learn something that readers or writers do, and then they are released to go try these skills within the context of their independent reading and writing.

    With this strategy English teachers use the curriculum in other classes for their students to practice reading and writing skills.
